Anne Marie Hochhalter, who barely survived the Columbine faculty capturing and was paralyzed from the waist down, died Sunday, almost 26 years after the assault.

Hochhalter was 43 years previous, the Denver Submit reported. Her pal Sue Townsend instructed the paper she was affected by medical issues brought on by the bloodbath.

Within the years following the capturing, Hochhalter grew to become an outspoken advocate in opposition to gun violence.

“She was a fighter. She’d get knocked down — she struggled a lot with health issues that stemmed from the shooting — but I’d watch her pull herself back up,” Townsend instructed the Denver Submit. “She was her best advocate and an advocate for others who weren’t as strong in the disability community.”

Hochhalter was a junior sitting within the lunchroom at Columbine Excessive on April 20, 1999, when killers Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris burst in, unleashed a hail of bullets and set off selfmade bombs. She was shot within the again and chest, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down.

Docs carried out surgical procedure for 4 hours to avoid wasting Hochhalter’s life. They later instructed her she was very near changing into the 14th sufferer of the assault, which left 12 college students and one trainer lifeless.

Six months after the capturing, Hochholter’s mom, who was battling bipolar dysfunction, died by suicide. Townsend, who misplaced her stepdaughter Lauren within the capturing, would later name Hochholter her “acquired daughter.”

When Klebold’s mom wrote a e book in 2016, Hochhalter penned a public letter stating she held no ailing will towards her.

“Just as I wouldn’t want to be judged by the sins of my family members, I hold you in that same regard,” Hochhalter wrote. “It’s been a rough road for me, with many medical issues because of my spinal cord injury and intense nerve pain, but I choose not to be bitter towards you.”
