    Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum pledged to “enhance the strong bilateral relations” between their two international locations the identical day President Trump enacted tariffs on them, in line with a readout on Trudeau’s web site.

    “Yesterday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum. Prime Minister Trudeau and President Sheinbaum discussed the deep people-to-people ties, the strong trade and investment relationship between Canada and Mexico, and the importance of preserving North American competitiveness and prosperity,” the Sunday readout reads.

    “They spoke about the imposition of U.S. tariffs on both countries, as well as their respective efforts to enhance border security and combat the production and distribution of illegal drugs. The leaders agreed to continue working together in areas of common interest and to enhance the strong bilateral relations between Canada and Mexico,” the readout continues.

    On Sunday, Trump defended his choice to impose sweeping tariffs on the U.S.’s high three buying and selling companions. He went on Reality Social after imposing the 25 p.c tariffs on Mexico and Canada, in addition to a ten p.c tariff on China.

    “The ‘Tariff Lobby,’ headed by the Globalist, and always wrong, Wall Street Journal, is working hard to justify Countries like Canada, Mexico, China, and too many others to name, continue the decades long RIPOFF OF AMERICA, both with regard to TRADE, CRIME, AND POISONOUS DRUGS that are allowed to so freely flow into AMERICA,” Trump mentioned on social media.

    Trudeau mentioned on Friday that his nation “won’t back down” from Trump’s earlier risk to impose a 25 p.c tariff.

    “We’re showing the new American administration that they have a strong partner in Canada when it comes to upholding border security, all while simultaneously underscoring that we won’t back down, that if tariffs are implemented against Canada, we will respond,” Trudeau mentioned.
